Last year, China’s coal imports increased by 30% year-on-year. Domestic net imports in 2011 continued to grow.

The National Development and Reform Commission released data yesterday, saying that China's coal imports maintained rapid growth in 2010 and exports continued to decline. According to customs statistics, the annual import of coal was 164.83 million tons, an increase of 30.99%; the export of coal was 19.03 million tons, down 15.03%; the net import of coal was 145.8 million tons, an increase of 42.37 million tons from the previous year, an increase of 29%. This is also the first time since China became a net importer of coal in 2009, net imports of coal continued to grow at a high rate.

The National Development and Reform Commission said that from the import situation, coal imports in the whole month remained at more than 11 million tons, reaching 17.34 million tons in December, a record high. At present, Indonesia has become China's largest coal importer, followed by Australia, Vietnam, Mongolia and Russia. The above five countries account for 84% of all imports.

China is the world's largest coal producer. In 2009, due to the financial crisis and government regulation to reduce exports, China became the net importer of coal for the first time, with a net import of 103 million tons. Li Chaolin, a domestic coal expert, said that although coal imports rose rapidly in 2010, the share of imported coal in China's coal market is still small, so it is difficult to affect the domestic coal price situation.

For the 2011 China coal import situation, Citigroup recently released a report that China's net coal imports in 2011 will increase by 63% to more than 200 million tons, mainly because China's domestic coal production is difficult to meet strong demand. 70% of China's energy consumption comes from coal. In order to improve energy efficiency and reduce pollution, the NDRC has clearly stated that it will curb total coal production. The relevant person in charge of the China Coal Transportation and Marketing Association told reporters that in recent years, the government’s intention to curb the export of resource products has become obvious. In the future, domestic coal exports will remain low. The industry also believes that, in general, the net domestic coal imports in 2011 will continue to grow.
