Large seabed rare earth deposit discovered in Japan
A research team at the University of Tokyo recently announced that they have discovered large-scale rare earth deposits for the first time in the seabed of Japan's exclusive economic zone, speculating that their rare earth reserves are equivalent to more than 220 times the current annual consumption of rare earths in Japan.
According to a report by the Japan Affairs Office website on the 29th, a research team led by Professor Kato Taiho of the University of Tokyo collected deep seabed mud from the Japanese exclusive economic zone about 310 kilometers southwest of South Bird Island in Japan. Contains high concentrations of rare earths . After investigations in the region, the team speculated that the area of the mud deposits here reached at least a thousand square kilometers, and the rare earth reserves were quite abundant.
The research team believes that the future issue is to develop mining technology and reduce mining costs. Kato Taihao pointed out: "In the long run, the price of rare earth has been rising, and mining from the seabed should be cost-effective."
