According to a market research report published in the United States, the global diamond, diamond-like and cubic boron nitride (CBN) coating market will double in the next five years.
Last year, global sales were about $473 million. According to a research report from the BCC Research Center in Massachusetts, it is expected to reach $530 million this year, and then grow at a rate of 14% per year, reaching $1 billion by 2012.
The three major markets in 2006 were razor blades, tools and wear parts, printer heads/recording heads and hard drives. These three markets account for nearly three-quarters of the diamond, diamond-like coating and coating markets.
However, the growth rates of various markets vary, with tools and wear parts, printer heads/recording heads and hard-disk coatings developing very rapidly, while razor blades and other consumer applications are far behind the former. Other markets, such as speaker diaphragms, electronics and medical devices, are relatively quick to develop.
Therefore, the BBC predicts that market share will change between 2006 and 2012. The share of the three major markets (razor blades, tools and wear parts, printer heads/recording heads and hard drives) will fall from 75% in 2006 to less than 70% in 2012. In particular, razor blades and other consumer applications are expected to lose market share. Some markets will see significant growth by 2012, including speakers and medical devices.
Geographically, North America was the world's largest diamond and diamond-like film market in 2006, accounting for 40%, followed by Asia and Europe. BCC predicts that North American market share will remain at around 40% by 2012, while Asia will lose some market share to Europe.
