Shanghai Jiaotong University: using a drone equipped with portable detection equipment to detect the three-dimensional distribution of haze

Shanghai Jiaotong University announced today that the team of Professor Peng Zhongren from the School of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering of the University has carried out long-term air pollution tracking and monitoring experiments with drones in the Yangtze River Delta region to obtain three-dimensional atmospheric pollutant concentration monitoring. The distribution data confirms the adverse effects of the inversion layer on PM2.5 diffusion and the distribution of traffic pollutants around the road, which can provide accurate data for smog prediction and prevention.
Experimental data shows that at a height of less than one kilometer from the ground, the concentration of PM2.5 generally decreases with height, because the pollutants continue to spread during the ascent. However, the inversion layer acts like a thick cap that blocks the vertical diffusion of contaminants, causing it to be forced to settle to the ground, thereby increasing the concentration of PM2.5 near the surface of the inversion layer.
The exhaust from the vehicles on the road is even more smog. “We conducted pollutant monitoring on the micro-environment around the roads of urban main roads, elevated roads, intersections, etc., and found that the areas with the most serious pollution from automobile exhaust gas within 300 to 500 meters on both sides of the road have higher PM2.5 concentration. And the closer the distance is to the road, the higher the concentration." Team member Lu Qingchang introduced.
It is reported that the current domestic air pollution detection is mainly concentrated on the ground, which is a fixed-point detection. On the one hand, it is impossible to understand the distribution of high-altitude haze, on the other hand, it is difficult to know the situation of haze transportation in the field. In order to overcome this limitation, China also uses unconventional observation methods such as overloaded human aircraft, air-exploration airwaves, and satellite remote sensing. However, the cost is high and the controllability is weak, which has not been widely used. How to achieve all-round inspection from the ground to the sky and from here to the other at a lower cost, Peng Zhongren and his research team solved the problem by loading portable testing equipment on the drone.
