Samsung and a number of university researchers in South Korea have worked together to create a new technology that will substantially double the capacity of our current lithium-ion battery, and the technology will soon be commercially viable. Researchers use silicon as the anode for new batteries. Silicon has been seen as a potentially revolutionary material in the field of energy storage because of its atomic structure. However, this material has a big problem, that is, the size changes during the charging and discharging cycles.

Samsung has developed methods to overcome this problem: researchers have coated silicon nanoparticles on graphene layers, which, thanks to their excellent electrical and mechanical properties, allow silicon nanoparticles to slide left and right and expand or contract when needed. Make sure the silicon material has all the space it needs.

By using this technology, Samsung is able to create batteries that use silicon anodes, which are almost twice the energy capacity of today's lithium batteries while maintaining size, size and safety. In fact, this new type of battery provides 1.8 times the energy density of today's lithium batteries, and maintains 1.5 times the energy density after 200 charge and discharge cycles.
