"MIRAI" uses impact absorbing material in Hydrated Chemical Industry
Sekisui Chemicals Co., Ltd. announced that the company's lower-part of its impact absorbing material has been adopted by Toyota's fuel cell vehicle "MIRAI." This part is molded from polystyrene polyolefin composite resin foam "PIOCELAN" (see figure) and has the shock absorbing performance necessary to protect passengers.
PIOCELAN is characterized by its combination of rigidity of expanded polystyrene (EPS) and polyolefin's cushioning properties. Moreover, corrosion resistance and wear resistance, which are generally considered to be weak points of EPS, have also been improved. The compressive strength is about 20% higher than that of foamed polypropylene. In addition, the dimensional stability of this material is also excellent, so precise design can also be achieved. This composite material was successfully produced in 1974, and it was independently developed by the company from raw material development to molding.
Components manufactured by PIOCELAN have been increasingly used in automobiles since the first half of the 2000s. Previously used by Toyota for Lexus, Prius, Crown and Camry. Among these models, in addition to the lower limb shock absorption material, there are cases for bumper core materials and tool boxes. (Reporter: Matsuda Chiho)
