AQT Solar will commercialize copper-zinc-tin-sulfur photovoltaic cells

On January 24, AQTSolar announced that its copper-zinc-tin-sulfur (CZTS) thin-film solar cell's conversion efficiency was close to 10%.

AQT pointed out that the process originally used for copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) photovoltaic cells is also suitable for CZTS cells. The company said it plans to produce a CZTS component called "CIGS 3.0" in 2012 and begin the commercialization of the product.

Like CIGS batteries, AQT's CZTS cells are designed to replace c-Si photovoltaic cells in standard c-Si PV module configurations

AQT claims that similar to CIGS photovoltaic cells, CTZS cells are also used as a substitute for crystalline silicon photovoltaic cells. However, raw materials in the CZTS are abundant in the earth's crust, and they cost less than the CIGS raw materials.

CZTS materials can be mined globally, reducing the impact of geopolitics on raw material sources. In the past, the mining and price volatility of indium materials had a significant impact on CIGS.
