47.1% efficiency! A new record for solar cells is born
Scientists John Geisz (left) and Ryan France (right) made a solar cell with an efficiency close to 50%.
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) announced that a group of scientists has manufactured six-junction solar cells with efficiencies as high as 47.1%. The efficiency measured under concentrated light conditions is 47.1%, thus setting a new world record.
NREL also pointed out that the efficiency of the same battery under single sunlight exposure was recorded as 39.2%.
This work was funded by the US Department of Energy ’s Office of Solar Energy Technology and described in a new paper in the journal Natural Energy. The latter is the chief scientist of the NREL high-efficiency crystal photoelectric research group.
In this project, the researchers used III-V materials with a wide range of light absorption characteristics to make this battery. This battery has 6 nodes, or photoactive layers, and each node is designed to capture Light in a specific part of the solar spectrum.
One of the authors, Ryan France, a scientist in the NREL III-V multi-connection group, pointed out that due to manufacturing costs, III-V solar cells are most often used to power artificial satellites, and on the ground, this battery is very suitable for use Yu Cong photovoltaic power generation.
"One way to reduce the cost is to reduce the required area. You can use a mirror to capture the light and focus it to a point. Compared with flat silicon solar cells, you only need to use one percent or even one thousand. A fraction of the material. By concentrating light, you can use less semiconductor material. Another benefit is that when you concentrate the light, the efficiency will increase. "
According to France, using such batteries to achieve efficiencies of more than 50% "is actually achievable." Geisz commented that in order to do this, it is necessary to reduce the resistance barrier in the battery that hinders the flow of current.
