UGNX6 radius compensation application
In CNC machining, semi-finishing and finishing are often used as the last pass to ensure the final dimensions of the part contour. Direct milling with a new tool, programming with the tool center path, although the operation is simple, but as the machining progresses, the tool wears out. At this time, the machining undercut phenomenon occurs when the distance from the core to the contour is constant. If the tool size needs to be replaced due to special circumstances, the original NC program will no longer be applicable. In these cases, replacing the new tool or re-issuing the new program will solve the problem.
The production site of this unit is small in size and various types of parts. Frequent replacement of tools and procedures will greatly reduce production efficiency. If the tool radius compensation milling method can be added in time in the UG machining operation, the above problem can be easily solved.
Tool radius compensation
When moving the tool, the tool path can be changed by the tool radius (see Figure 1). To make the offset as large as the actual tool radius value, first create an offset vector whose length is equal to the tool radius (starting). The offset vector is perpendicular to the tool path from the workpiece toward the center of the tool. After starting, the linear offset and circular interpolation commands are specified, and the tool offset can be processed by an offset vector.

When the tool wears out, you can enter the actual radius compensation, that is, the offset amount, to achieve the final size of the part. If there is a temporary tool shortage, such as the previous φ 12mm tool, the radius compensation input is 6mm, and now replaced with φ 10mm tool, the radius compensation input can be changed to 5mm during processing without reprocessing the new program.
2. Radius compensation in the applicable environment of UG
After roughing by the cavity milling mill_contour, a margin of 0.1 to 0.2 mm is generally left for finishing by the operation setting. The most common radius compensation is used in the contour milling PLANAR_PROFILE in the face milling mill_planar operation to remove the margin left by the roughing and to achieve the final dimensional guarantee of the part contour.
