In order to design and develop this “sweat sensing system”, Jie Wei and his team specifically consulted with exercise physiologist and George Brokes, professor of integrated biology at the University of California. From the sample made by the research team, it can be seen that there are five sensors in a flexible circuit board. These sensors measure glucose and lactate of metabolites, sodium and potassium in electrolytes, and skin temperature. The integrated system allows researchers to calibrate and match the readings of other sensors in real-time by measuring skin temperature, because the glucose and lactate sensor's response is very temperature-dependent.

Adjacent to the sensor is a wireless transmission circuit board made of ready-made silicone originals. The researchers used more than 10 integrated circuit chips to take charge of sensor measurements, signal enhancements, adaptations to body temperature changes, and wireless data transfer. In addition, they also created a special app (mobile phone software) to synchronize the sensor's data to the phone and connect it to the smart bracelet and headband.

In the experiment, the researchers distributed the equipment to volunteers performing a variety of indoor and outdoor sports. The goal was to pedal bicycles or run outdoors. The test time ranged from several minutes to as much as one hour. Through a series of tests, they hope to integrate all circuit functions into a single chip in the future. This will reduce the size of the device and measure more results at a time.

Brooks believes that this "sensor" is full of potential, and it may be used in the future to measure other than sweat.
