Study found that solar panels should face west instead of facing south

Installing solar panels on the roof we are usually told to face south. However, the researchers found that facing the West is the most cost-effective. The study focused on the United States, and the U.S. electricity price was charged on a step-by-step basis. The peak electricity price was more expensive, and electricity was used in the afternoon and evening. The electricity bill was more expensive than the morning, and the electricity generated by solar energy was more valuable.

The researchers said that if faced west, peak power generation will come when the afternoon electricity is more valuable.

If facing west, after 5pm, the power generated by the panel still has 55% of the peak power; if facing south, the power generated at this time is only 15% of the peak value. Installing a solar tracker to keep the panel facing the sun can increase the output by 45%, but the expensive cost of the tracker completely offsets its benefits.
