Fermented with straw, you can still make alcohol, so that traditional alcohol production will no longer "grab food" with people. Yesterday, the reporter learned from Hubei University of Technology that a gene recombinant "Zombicastomonas" developed by the team of Professor Wang Haoyong of the School of Biological Engineering has achieved a major breakthrough recently. The bacteria can use straw to produce ethanol (commonly known as alcohol), not only cost is significant. Decreased, and ethanol concentration increased by approximately 30% over conventional methods.

Gene recombination from E. coli

At present, industrial ethanol used for medical treatment and gasoline addition is mainly produced from fermented grains such as corn, and the production cost remains high. How to reduce the production cost is a difficult problem that all countries are trying to solve.

Since 2005, Prof. Wang Haoyong, who has returned from studying in the United States, has led the research and development team and has long been engaged in the research of Zymomonas mobilis for the efficient production of ethanol. After repeated experiments, they found inspiration from E. coli and reconstructed an original new type of bacteria using the genes in E. coli. This strain can be fermented in xylose and glucose to efficiently produce ethanol.

Wang Haoyong introduced that a large amount of xylose and glucose are contained in various crop straws and branches such as rice, corn and wheat. Among them, xylose accounts for 30% and glucose accounts for 50%. One kilogram of xylose or glucose can produce about half a kilogram of ethanol.

It is understood that ethanol is currently the world's largest production of bio-energy. Our country currently produces more than 3 million tons of ethanol annually. As oil is depleted, renewable ethanol has become the focus of global attention as a renewable energy alternative to petroleum.

Straw made up to 30% higher alcohol concentration

Wang Haoyong told reporters that the use of a new type of "M. mobilis" to use straw to make ethanol has at least three major advantages. First, it reduces the reliance on nutrients, which can reduce production costs. This new type of bacteria, in the entire cultivation process, only need ordinary chemical reagents, including glucose, urea, magnesium chloride, etc., can normally grow and efficiently produce ethanol. Secondly, it was found through experiments that the highest concentration of ethanol was significantly increased with this strain of bacteria, which was about 30% higher than the conventional method. In addition, it is not sensitive to acidic environment and high temperature conditions, and it is more acid-proof, more heat-resistant and more adaptable than before.

Straw degrading surgery

Wang Haoyong said, "At present, the next issue we face is to study how straw is degraded." Only by degrading the straw, “Z. mobilis” can play the power of efficient and rapid production of ethanol.

Recently, the papers of Wang Haoyong's team were published by international authoritative magazines, and were included in international authoritative websites such as “Renewable Energy Global Innovation”. It is understood that this site only includes major scientific achievements from the global landmark. (Reporter Xie Xie)
