Scientists find substances harder than diamonds

For a long time, people believed that the hardest substance in the world was diamonds. Recently, scientists have discovered a substance that is harder than diamonds, “cubic boron nitride”. This transparent crystal has a Vickers hardness of 108 GPa and a Vickers hardness of 100 GPa.

The mystery of this hard substance comes from its nano-microstructure, which is like a layer of layers of folded onion and nested together like a layer of Russian matryoshka. When placed at 1800 degrees Celsius and 15 billion Pascals (68,000 atmospheres), boron nitride can form such a structure.

Scientists found that "cubic boron nitride" is harder than diamonds and has a Vickers hardness of 108 Gpa.

In order to make the material harder, scientists usually try to reduce the size of the particles in the crystal. However, this method does not always work: When the size of the particles shrinks below 10 nm, their inherent structural defects are almost as large as the particles, which weakens the structure's strength.

"Cube Boron Nitride" has excellent thermal stability and chemical stability, hardness greater than diamonds. This superhard material has a very wide range of applications in the fields of mechanics, drilling, grinding and cutting.
