LAPIS Semiconductor announced on March 18, 2016 that it has developed a secondary protection IC "ML5232" for lithium ion battery packs that supports up to 14 battery cells in series. Sample shipments are scheduled for 2016. Mass production starts in the month. The secondary protection IC is an IC that provides secondary protection when a protection IC that constitutes a lithium-ion battery monitoring system fails to function due to a certain fault. The use of this IC can further increase reliability and make it easier for products to meet functional safety standards. LAPIS has previously introduced products that support the connection of four battery cells in series. This time, it has been improved to support the connection of 14 battery cells in series. According to the company's introduction, this "can significantly reduce the number of components, can reduce the installation area of ​​about 50%." This product is mainly used for electric bicycles, power storage systems and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS).
The secondary protection IC immediately outputs a protection signal when the system on the primary IC side of the lithium-ion battery monitoring system fails to operate due to a failure. Protection signals can be output in two ways. One is the n-channel open-drain version and the other is the CMOS version. Using these two protection signals, once an overcharge is detected, the fuse is cut off and the charge control power MOSFET is turned off. The new product's power supply voltage is +7 to 80V, overcharge detection voltage is 4.5V, and the error is ±20mV (maximum). The overcharge release voltage is 3.9V and the error is ±30mV (maximum). Built-in detection delay timer. The delay time for overcharge detection is 2 seconds, and the delay time for overcharging cancellation is 0.2 seconds.
