Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT):
Polybutylene terephathalate, a crystalline thermoplastic engineering polymerized from dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) and 1,4 butanediol (1,4-Butanediol). plastic.
PBT, also known as thermoplastic polyester plastic, is suitable for use by different processing industries. Generally, it is added with additives or blended with other plastics. Different additives can be manufactured with different specifications. Because PBT has heat resistance, weather resistance, chemical resistance, electrical properties, low water absorption and good gloss, it is widely used in electronic appliances, auto parts, machinery, household goods, etc., and PBT products are related to ABS, PC, POM, PA, etc. are collectively referred to as five general-purpose engineering plastics.
PBT main chemical and physical properties
PBT is one of the toughest engineering thermoplastics. It is a semi-crystalline material with excellent chemical stability, mechanical strength, electrical insulation properties and thermal stability. The melting point (225 ° C) and high temperature deformation temperature are lower than PET materials. The Vicat softening temperature is approximately 170 °C. The glass transition temperature is between 22 ° C and 43 ° C. Due to the high crystallization rate of PBT, its viscosity is very low, and the cycle time of plastic parts processing is short. PBT has a weak hygroscopic property. The tensile strength of the non-reinforced PBT is 50 MPa, and the tensile strength of the glass-reinforced PBT is 170 MPa. PBT crystallizes very quickly, so it is easy to bend and deform the part due to uneven cooling during the injection molding process. Generally, the shrinkage rate of PBT materials is between 1.5% and 2.8%. The 30% glass fiber reinforced PBT material shrinks between 0.3% and 1.6%.
Capacity distribution:
According to incomplete statistics, PBT has a global production capacity of about 2 million tons, of which more than half of its production capacity is in China. Below is the capacity of various manufacturers.

Note: Most of the domestic manufacturers use the production technology of German Gemma, so the quality of PBT produced is not much different from that of foreign manufacturers.
PBT main application areas:
1, the automotive industry
Half of the PBT consumed in the automotive industry is a PBT/PC alloy with PC, which can be used as a car bumper. In addition, PBT can also be used for window motor casings, locomotive motor parts, automotive transmission gear boxes, radiator grilles, body panels, wheel covers, door and window components, and the like.
2, electronic appliances
The connector is a bridge between signals and is an indispensable component for transmitting electronic signals and power connections.
The physical properties and price of PBT balance are in line with the needs of the connector. PBT is usually added with 30% glass fiber blending as a connector. PBT is widely used due to its mechanical properties, solvent resistance, formability and low cost. The second largest use of PBT in electronic products is used as a cooling fan. The cooling fan is placed in the machine for a long time to rotate to help dissipate heat. The plastic properties require heat resistance, flame retardancy, insulation and mechanical strength. PBT is usually added. 30% glass fiber is modified and used as a cooling fan frame and fan blade.
3. Electrical industry
The third use of PBT is as a winding shaft in transformers and relays. It is generally molded with PBT plus 30% glass fiber. The physical properties of the bobbin include insulation, heat resistance, solder resistance, fluidity, strength, etc. Suitable materials are phenolic resin, PBT, PA6, PET. The properties of phenolic resins are good, but their formability is inferior to that of PBT. Therefore, PBT resins are used for products with small size and complicated shape.
4. Other uses
Its use of PBT materials, such as 15% glass fiber PBT material used as the base and outer casing of energy-saving lamps, PBT/PC alloy as the sole of skates, other such as relay casing, socket, switch, tuner casing, food processing blade , vacuum cleaner components, electric fans, hair dryer housings, coffee vessels, and the like.
Introduction to PBT material injection molding process:
1, drying treatment:
PBT materials are easily hydrolyzed at high temperatures and must be dried prior to processing.
It is recommended to dry in air at 120 ° C, 6-8 hours, or 150 ° C for 2-4 hours. The humidity of the PBT material must be less than 0.03%.
2. Melting temperature:
225~275°C, recommended temperature: 250°C.
3, injection pressure:
Medium (up to 1500 bar).
Injection speed: The injection speed should be as fast as possible (because PBT solidifies quickly).
4, mold temperature:
For unreinforced materials, it is 40~60 °C. The cooling channels of the mold are well designed to reduce the bending of the plastic parts. The loss of heat must be fast and even. It is recommended that the mold cooling channel has a diameter of 12 mm.
5, the flow channel:
It is recommended to use a circular flow path to increase the pressure transfer (empirical formula: runner diameter = plastic thickness + 1.5mm).
6, the gate:
Various types of gates can be used. Hot runners can also be used, but care should be taken to prevent leakage and degradation of the material. The gate diameter should be between 0.8t and 1.0t (t refers to the thickness of the plastic part). If a submerged gate is used, the recommended minimum diameter is 0.75mm.
