Lithium-ion batteries have been widely used in portable electronic devices such as notebook computers, mobile phones, and digital cameras. The battery separator is a key material to ensure the safety of the battery and affect the performance of the battery. It plays a role in preventing the positive and negative electrodes from contacting, preventing the battery from short-circuiting and transmitting ions. The thermal stability of the separator determines the working temperature tolerance range of the battery and the safety of the battery. . Currently, commercial lithium ion battery separators are mainly polyolefin organic separators. The advantages are low cost, good mechanical properties, and good electrochemical stability. The disadvantages are low porosity and poor wettability to electrolytes. Poor thermal stability may result in short circuit of the battery. In serious cases, it may cause fire or explosion, resulting in potential safety hazards.
Recently, the team led by Zhu Yingjie, a researcher at the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the team led by Hu Xianluo, a professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, developed a new type of inorganic refractory paper based on hydroxyapatite long nanowires. A novel hydroxyapatite ultralong nanowire base high temperature lithium ion battery separator has advantages such as high flexibility, good mechanical strength, high porosity, excellent electrolyte wetting and adsorption performance, and thermal stability. High temperature, high temperature resistance, flame retardant and fire resistance, and its structural integrity can still be maintained at 700°C. The new hydroxyapatite ultra long nanowire base high temperature battery separator assembled battery has better electrochemical performance, cycle stability and rate performance than the battery assembled with polypropylene separator. What's more, batteries assembled with hydroxyapatite ultra-long nanowire-based high-temperature battery separators have excellent thermal stability, are resistant to high temperatures, and can maintain normal operation in a high temperature environment of 150°C and illuminate small bulbs. The battery assembled with polypropylene separators short-circuited quickly at a high temperature of 150°C. If the novel hydroxyapatite ultra-long nanowire base high-temperature battery separator is used, the electrolyte and electrode material that can withstand high temperature can be matched, and the operating temperature and safety of the battery can be further greatly improved. This research work is of great significance to greatly improve the operating temperature range of lithium-ion batteries and the safety of lithium-ion batteries. It is expected that the novel hydroxyapatite ultralong nanowire-based high temperature battery separator can also be applied to various other types of high temperature resistant batteries and energy storage systems such as sodium ion batteries, super capacitors, and the like. The relevant research results were published in Advanced Materials and applied for an invention patent.
