HIT uses charred bread to make carbon foam
Due to its light weight and high performance, carbon foam has become a promising new insulating material in the aerospace field. Previous researchers used foods such as bananas and watermelons to make carbon foam. Researchers at Harbin Institute of Technology recently used carbonized foamed bread as a material to produce carbon foam, which also has properties such as thermal insulation and electromagnetic shielding.
The researchers first put the bread in the oven and set the temperature at 80°C (176°F) for 18 hours. The bread was then placed in a special furnace using argon and calcined to a carbon foam. The carbon foam obtained by this method has the same properties as other carbon foams. In addition, this carbon foam material is more flame-retardant and less expensive than existing materials.
The results of this study were published in the journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, sponsored by the American Chemical Society.
